European shag

(Gulosus aristotelis)

European shags (Gulosus aristotelis), representing the only coastal diving species within the scope of the project, are being instrumented with GLS and GPS loggers at 10 SEATRACK localities.

The European shag has been a SEATRACK species since the beginning of the programme in 2014.

Since the North Atlantic population is numerous and widespread the IUCN classifies European shags as “least concern”.

The European shag can be found along the entire Atlantic coast of Europe including Iceland and as far south as the coast of Morocco. It ranges in the entire Mediterranean nesting on parts of the coastline of most European and North African countries, as well as parts of the Black Sea coast.

European shags are mainly black in colour with a metallic green-tinged sheen on the feathers and a yellow throat-patch. During the breeding season they have a small crest. European shags feed on a wide range of benthic, demersal and schooling, pelagic fish.
