Húsey is situated in the Úthérað area of East Iceland, between two glacial rivers, Jökulsá á Dal and Lagarfljót. It is a vast flatland area with vegetation in the consisting mostly of various types of small shrubs and grasses.
Úthérað is classified as an important bird area by Birdlife International due to large breeding populations of species such as Arctic skuas (1,300 pairs), Red- throated Diver (220 pairs) andGraylag goose (7,517 pairs). Great skuas (Stercorarius skua) also breed in the area with the most recent population estimate since 2000 counting 265 breeding pairs (Guðmundsson et al. 2001), but counts in recent years have shown a decline in the population. GLS and GPS logger deployments started in 2023 on Great skuas in a colony north of the farm of Húsey, where there is an estimate of 40 to 55 breeding pairs.
